MAY 2010 In the Spotlight
It's time to perform and be in the spotlight! This month spend some time making musical instruments to be used in the pack meeting variety show. The variety show could be skits, songs, puppet shows, magic trick - you name it. Have the boys and their parents and families participate in a variety show and have some adults record the show. Dens can create posters announcing the show and make programs to let everyone know what's coming. Commercials could be videotaped by the den during their den meetings and then be shown between acts. (Get the parents involved) Take a photo for the local newspaper or a video clip for the local TV station for recognition of their achievements and put Cub Scouting in the spotlight. Visit a television, radio, or cable station to see how they prepare and produce their shows. Attend a play or musical production. The Cub Scouts can earn the Music belt loop and pin.

Every fall the Cub Scouts hold Popcorn Sale. The sale typically continues from September to November.

Have you ever noticed how little you pay for scouting? Each year after your child's first full year, the Pack pays your child's membership fee, purchases all metals, patches, and awards, buys the derby cars and trophies, and has even reimbursed for camp participation.

The money to do all this comes from popcorn sales, so please ensure we can keep doing all we do for the kids by supporting the popcorn sale and encouraging your child's participation! For information on the popcorn products we're selling, see the Trails-End website by clicking here.

Interesting Fact - History of Webelos

Created in 1941, the original Webelos program consisted simply of a new Webelos rank which boys could earn during their last few months in Cub Scouting. To earn the new rank, Cub Scouts first had to earn Lion, and they had to learn the skills required for the Boy Scout Tenderfoot badge. The Cub Scouts who worked on the Webelos rank were not yet called Webelos, and they remained in a regular Cub Scout den. In 1954, 10-1/2 year olds were organized into special Webelos dens, although they still had to earn Lion to qualify for the Webelos rank. In 1967, Cub Scouting dropped the Lion rank, extended the Webelos program from six months to the last year of Cub Scouting, and created the first 15 Webelos activity badges. In 1977, they added a new Webelos rank (the old Webelos rank was now called the Arrow of Light rank). In 1987, the Webelos program added five more activity badges (for a total of 20), and realigned the requirements of several activity badges to more closely match the requirements for the Boy Scout Tenderfoot rank. In 1988-89, the Webelos program was expanded to cover the last two years of Cub Scouting, though the BSA soon after began encouraging packs to graduate Webelos in February instead of May or June (so they could get started with a Scout troop before summer, and thus be less likely to drop out over the summer).

                  Importance Of Good Leadership And
                              Training

CRUSO, North Carolina (CNN) -- Good training and preparation kept a group of Boy Scouts safe after they became lost while hiking in the North Carolina mountains, a troop leader and a relative said Monday.

"Our Scouts did get a little off course," says Scouting official Rodney Jones.
Eight Scouts, ages 11 to 14, and their three adult leaders emerged unharmed from the dense forest Monday morning after an intense overnight search by 28 rescuers and nine dogs.

The scouts had failed to return home from a camping trip Sunday in the Pisgah National Forest southwest of Asheville.

"They had gotten off trail, which is not uncommon in that part of the woods," said Kathryn Logan, sister of one of the Scout leaders and aunt of one of the Scouts. "... They had been backpacking all weekend, so they were prepared, so they're OK and everybody's fine."

The Scouts and their leaders "did just what they were supposed to do, they hunkered down," said Rodney Jones, assistant scoutmaster of Troop 217, from Raleigh, North Carolina.

Jones, whose son was among the missing campers, referred to the Scout motto and said the group "behaved as Scouts, and were prepared."
