Gettysburg Hike, September, 2004

Pack 271 at GettysburgWe had 36 people from Pack 271 attend the Gettysburg Hike on Saturday. After a fascinating view of the battle from the Electronic Map Room, we walked across the road and into the cemetery, to walk around the graves of the thousands of unknown soldiers, and to visit the Soldiers National Monument, where President Lincoln delivered the Gettysburg Address, on November 19, 1863. (Click here to see the address.)

Those who participated are eligible to receive the Gettysburg Heritage Trails patch. This is the middle part of the patch, with Lincoln's head, and the word Gettysburg across the bottom. There are four other parts to this award. As you complete each portion of the award, you earn the part of the patch that goes with it. When you have completed all five parts, you are eligible to receive the Gettysburg Historic Trails Medal, which looks very nice. Two of the five parts are substantial hikes; the rest are more walks that involve touring a portion of the battlefield.

All Scouts who participated in the hike on Saturday will receive the main patch. If adults or siblings who came with us want to purchase patches for themselves, they are $2.25 each for the main patch. If you wish, you may also get a plastic holder for the patch pieces so you don't have to sew it onto your uniform, for $1.00. If you came with us, did not already sign up for the patch, and you would like to get it, please contact Brian Groover, at 301-514-3764. He will be ordering the patches the week of October 8th, 2004.
