Th home stretch!!!!

posted Apr 21, 2015, 4:48 AM by Vince Malanphy   [ updated Apr 21, 2015, 4:51 AM ]

Den 8 has completed all the requirements for Bear!  I am proud of all the scouts for their efforts and devotion since September.

We have accomplished a lot in the past 8 months and still have May and part of June to go :)

Our last visit to the LEC was a great success and the scouts hopefully had fun and learned much about law enforcement.  Thanks to Mike Grunwell for helping set that event up.

We have even spent some den time OUTSIDE finally!!!!!!!  We conducted an outdoor flag ceremony on our lashing flagpole, conducted a nature scavenger hunt, and burned some calories with some physical activities.

I hope to see you all at the Pack meeting this Friday for our rank ceremony.

Are we there yet???

posted Mar 1, 2015, 1:29 PM by Vince Malanphy

Well Den 8, we have just completed the major milestone of earning our Whittling Chip cards! Congrats to all the scouts and parents on this great accomplishment.

I am finally recovering from all the whipped cream in my face, and hair, and ears, and nose....well you get the idea.  Very proud of the popcorn sales our den had this last selling season.

Our next areas of focus will be Law enforcement and wildlife, and also saving and spending well.  Once we have completed our rank requirements this month, we will work on STEM activities and hopefully some outdoor activities in April/May/June.

Let's keep the momentum going!!!

Den 8 and Whittling Chip

posted Feb 16, 2015, 5:21 AM by Vince Malanphy

Den 8 is nearing completion of their "Whittling Chip" and I am proud of all the scouts for a job well done listening to instructions and being safe.

Parents continue to remind your scouts of safe practices with their knives and we are on track for awarding the chips at the next pack meeting.

Speaking of the next pack meeting, we will also be handing out the popcorn awards and recognizing one of our Bears for selling over $1000.00!

Keep up the work at home and participation in the upcoming pack events help earn beads and arrow points towards the bear rank.

Thanks

Joe

Bears,

Happy New Year!!!!  I hope that all of you had a great holiday period and spent lots of time with your family and friends.

A new and exciting year is upon us and I look forward to us getting right back into it.  Our next den meeting is Tuesday, Jan 6 and we have many things to cover, so be on time :) (Including getting your Pine Wood Derby cars!)

We ended this last year very well and some of our scouts are already on the verge of earning their Bear rank.  Let's keep the momentum going and finish this scouting year strong.

Den 8 Veterans Day

posted Nov 11, 2014, 1:15 PM by Vince Malanphy

Den 8,

I wanted to thank all the veterans and their families in our pack for their service and hope that all of you had a great Veterans day today and did something special.

I attended the Veterans Day ceremony at the memorial down town on Bentz St.  If you had not had a chance to go there, please do so and look around.

The Bears continue to make good strides in the den and we have focused on this months theme of Citizenship for most of our activities.

As we get into the holiday months, we have some neat pack activities coming up. Such as Caroling at Citizens nursing home and the Kris Kringle parade through downtown Frederick.

Den 8 way ahead

posted Nov 2, 2014, 1:10 PM by Vince Malanphy

I wanted to give all the parents of Den 8 the clear path ahead for the den to get our progress beads completed.

The link below takes you to the Bear rank program section where I have highlighted the achievements we have and will be working on towards Bear.  You will see things such as faith, family events, cooking, safety, and outdoor skills.

We only need to complete 12 of 24 achievements and most scouts are half way there already. The achievements that are completed, in addition to these, will be counted towards electives and arrow heads.

I have chosen these achievements based on their fun factor, but more importantly the practical application of what our scouts should be able to learn as part of life skills.

Thanks

Joe

Den 8 Spooktacular Update

posted Oct 29, 2014, 10:19 AM by Vince Malanphy

Den 8 has been moving forward with our path to Bear.  About 75% of our den has received their 2nd progress bead and already on their 3rd!

We had two Bobcat ceremonies during our last pack meeting.  Congratulations to Hunter and Tyler for their hard work, and I look forward to Matt earning his in November.

Kayden has joined our ranks for Den 8 and we will welcome him at our next den meeting and make him feel part of the bear family!

Parents, I wanted to thank all of you for your time and effort to get your scouts to events and in uniform.  This is a challenge of your time and I appreciate it as much as your scouts do as well.

Our next meeting is on Nov 4th and I look forward to seeing you there!  Send me updates as you complete the family activities in the handbook.

Den 8 progress

posted Oct 13, 2014, 2:17 PM by Vince Malanphy

Den 8 has been making great strides on working towards Bear and multitude of other awards, such as Leave No Trace, Outdoor Activity Awards, and beltloops and pins.

The scouts received their first progress bead, for bear, at our last meeting and some already have earned their second bead. (Summer camp and pack camping events really expedite the achievement earning!)

Our new scouts this year are putting forth tremendous efforts by getting squared away in their uniforms, learning the Bobcat traits, and working as a team.

Keep up the good work scouts and parents of Den 8!  Our next den meeting is 21 October; bring your regatta boats if you have completed them and share them with the den.
